Najarian R. Peters, a scholar and law professor who researches areas of privacy, torts, education, artificial intelligence (AI) ethics, and governance, was recently appointed Fellow of AI Governance at KU’s Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics (CCSD).

Peters has been a faculty associate at the Barkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University since 2019. Her work centers liberatory and human dignity-centered frameworks and is interdisciplinary. She provides continuing legal education in AI Ethics and has been invited to present her AI and child privacy research both domestically and internationally, including the Gamm Symposium at Tulane University and the Second Istanbul Privacy Symposium: Law, Ethics, and Technology, Istanbul Bilgi University, Istanbul, Turkey.

According to David Tamez, assistant research professor and CCSD managing director, Peters was selected for this role not only because of her existing collaborations with CCSD, but also because of her extensive expertise in technology law, privacy, and AI governance. Additionally, she has shown a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and to developing student-centered courses on AI ethics and privacy for KU’s School of Law and Honors Program. “While Professor Peters and I have already begun collaborating on projects—including an article on AI and education that we hope to publish in the Philosophy of Education and AI: A Future Humanities special issue—her appointment as the Center’s inaugural Fellow in AI Governance formalizes our collaboration and provides a foundation for exploring new areas of research,” says Tamez.

Peters’ law articles and essays have been published in national and international journals, including the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, University of California Law Review, Washington & Lee Law Review, and Seton Hall Law Review, as well as the 5Rights Foundation’s Digital Futures Commission publication Education Data Futures: Critical, Regulator and Practical Reflections. Peters created the privacy-focused conference PrivacyPraxis in 2020 and co-designed the Wellness in Democracy series at KU, focused on misinformation and disinformation, which she has co-hosted since 2022.

CCSD is one of six centers of research that comprises the Institute of Information Sciences (I2S) at KU. The mission of I2S is to sustain and grow national leadership in the creation, dissemination, and commercialization of new technologies in computer systems, communication systems, and radar systems.
