Society, Technology, Ethical, and Philosophy Lab

Mission:

The Society, Technology, Ethics, and Philosophy (STEP) Lab is an interdisciplinary research group within the Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics (CCSD) at the University of Kansas. Our mission is to conduct in-depth philosophical and ethical inquiry into the societal impacts of emerging technologies. We aim to foster a deeper understanding of how technology shapes our lives, values, and communities, and to guide the development of technology in a direction that promotes human flourishing and social well-being.

About the Lab:

As a core component of the Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics, the STEP Lab is dedicated to bridging the gap between the technical and the humanistic. We bring together researchers from philosophy, ethics, and other humanities disciplines to collaborate with technologists, social scientists, and policymakers. Our work is grounded in the belief that a rich understanding of the human condition is essential for navigating the complex ethical challenges of the digital age.

The STEP Lab provides a space for critical reflection and constructive dialogue on the most pressing issues at the intersection of technology and society. We are committed to producing research that is not only academically rigorous but also accessible and relevant to a broader public audience, including industry leaders, government officials, and the general public.

If you are interested in participating in lab discussions, please email ccsd@ku.edu.

Research Focus:

Building on the broader research themes of the Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics, the STEP Lab will initially focus on the following key areas:

  • The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Investigating the moral and ethical implications of AI, including algorithmic bias, the nature of AI consciousness, and the impact of AI on human relationships and employment.
  • The Philosophy of Technology: Examining the fundamental nature of technology and its relationship to human values, culture, and society.
  • Digital Ethics and Governance: Developing ethical frameworks and policy recommendations for the responsible design, deployment, and regulation of emerging technologies.
  • Technology and the Human Condition: Exploring how technology is transforming our understanding of what it means to be human, including our sense of self, our relationships with others, and our place in the world.
