The Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics (CCSD), part of KU’s Institute of Information Sciences (I2S), studies the interaction between internet technology and society. The research organization brings together expertise from the humanities and social sciences to collaborate on work with computer engineers and technology developers.

In April, CCSD will host an in-person workshop for a deep-dive into Advancing Fairness in Machine Learning. In line with its mission of studying the blend of social infrastructure with evolving digital technologies, the event seeks to explore rapidly growing algorithmic systems from technical, social, legal, and philosophical perspectives. The goal is to encourage innovative and practical approaches to biases and inequalities that emerge from machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The Workshop on Advancing Fairness in Machine Learning will take place April 9-10, 2025, at the Kansas Memorial Union. CCSD is opening the workshop to participants across campus and beyond to address a diverse aspect of fairness in machine learning, such as techniques for bias detection, evaluation metrics (trade-offs between fairness and accuracy), ethical implications, and regulatory and legal considerations. An emphasis for discussion will focus on real-world applications and challenges in deploying fair machine learning systems in disciplines such as healthcare, education, hiring and criminal justice.

Further details for participation consideration, including abstract guidelines and deadlines, can be found here. For inquiries, please contact ccsd@ku.edu.
