The University of Kansas Blockchain Institute (KUBI) is a student-led technology initiative established under the Institute for Information Sciences (I2S). KUBI provides a platform for researchers, both faculty and student-led, to collaborate, publish work, mentor students, and educate curious minds. The organization strives to create one of the best blockchain talent pools in academia.

KUBI will host the second annual Midwest Blockathon, a 36-hour, blockchain-focused hackathon at the University of Kansas from March 6-8, 2026. The event is. open to all builders, traders, and researchers interested in the Web3 space. Participation from inside and outside of KU is equally encouraged.

"The Blockathon is designed to be highly educational and accessible, especially for students who are curious about Web3 but haven’t built anything in the space yet," says Jahnvi Maddila, KUBI's current president. "Our goal is that every participant leaves with (1) a project they can showcase, and (2) a stronger understanding of modern blockchain concepts and tools."

What to Expect:

  • Workshops + hands-on onboarding (beginner-friendly): wallets, smart contracts, basic dApp development, and practical web3 workflows
  • Mentorship from industry experts throughout the weekend (technical + product guidance, debugging help, architecture feedback)
  • Team formation support (students can come with a team or join one at the event)
  • A collaborative environment centered on learning-by-building
  • The chance to present at demos and compete for significant prizes

This event is a great fit for students in or interested in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Business, Entrepreneurship, and Finance.  Basically a student who loves to build, experiment, and explore what’s next in technology.

Those interested in participating can learn more by visiting the Midwest Blockathon website. Registration is currently open. Questions can be sent to ku.blockchain.institute@gmail.com.
